This evening a new report from NHL insider David Pagnotta has sparked the idea that the Toronto Maple Leafs could trade for veteran defenseman Seth Jones. Earlier this week a report connected the Toronto Maple Leafs to a trade that would land them defenseman Mario Ferraro. With the Maple Leafs offensive unit performing well so far this season and the Maple Leafs having a well-balanced lineup the focus has shifted to the defensive unit when it comes to potential trade deadline additions. After Brad Treliving and the Maple Leafs signed Chris Tanev and Oliver Ekman-Larsson many Maple Leafs fans were expecting the defensive unit to be much improved this season and for the most part the play from the group overall has been solid. Still, the Maple Leafs lack depth on defense and still could desperately use an offensive presence to take some of that pressure off of Morgan Rielly. With this in mind, a new report from David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period has named Seth Jones as a player to watch out for on the trade market.
Toronto Maple Leafs could look to acquire Seth Jones after he is placed on the trade block
In a new report from Pagnotta, he decided to list some players that will likely be made available heading into the NHL Trade Deadline. One of the most notable names on the list is Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Seth Jones. According to separate sources, the Blackhawks are willing to move Jones - under the right circumstances, of course - and would also be open to retaining some of his contract, which comes with a $9.5 million salary cap hit. Jones throughout his career has had seasons where he put up 50-plus points but has been inconsistent both offensively and defensively. Throughout the last 4 seasons, Jones has played with the Blackhawks and had varied success doing great in his first season in the Windy City and then falling off from there. At 30 years old Jones is in the third year of an eight-year contract with a hefty 9.5 million dollar price tag. Jones does have a no-movement clause and would have to agree to be sent to Toronto if the Maple Leafs wanted to acquire him.

The Maple Leafs would need the Blackhawks to take on some of that salary for this move to be worth it but if they can get Jones at a discount it is a risk they should be willing to take. With the Maple Leafs core group all being in their prime now is the time to go all in and make win-now moves and trading for Seth Jones could be one of those major moves that shows both the players in the locker room and the fan base a huge sign of confidence. As the NHL Trade Deadline comes closer we will continue to update the availability of Seth Jones and the Maple Leafs overall plans to add before the deadline.
