Matt Murray has been dealing with nagging injuries for years, and on a recent podcast he revealed he feels good to go and is ready to have a big bounce-back year. Matt Murray did not suit up once for the Toronto Maple Leafs last season after undergoing bilateral hip surgery in October 2023. He did appear in three games for the AHL Toronto Marlies towards the end of the season and helped them clinch a playoff spot. The Leafs re-signed Matt Murray on July 1st to a one-year contract worth $875,000. Murray was recently a guest on the Slangin' the Bizkit podcast with Travis Ridgen where he talked about his hip issues, his recovery process as well as how he currently feels. Matt Murray said that his hips have caused him long-term problems which is why he finally agreed to have surgery because he was tired of missing so much game action. He's hoping the surgery will help get his career back on the right track going forward. My hips haven't felt this good in a long time. I've dealt with hip pain going back as far as Wilkes-Barre when I was like 20 or 21, It just got to a point where it was starting to mess up everything else. I was starting to get low back issues, starting to pull my groin a lot, and starting to have a lot of ankle problems. It just got to a point where you try to get to the root of the problem, which in goaltending, for the most part, tends to be the hips. That's kind of what steers the ship, I would say. It's the most in-demand part of the body when playing in goal. I just figured it was time to get those fixed up and get a nice little reset. He may not start the year with the Leafs, now that they have Joseph Woll and Anthony Stolarz as their dynamic goalie duo, but Murray is going to be ready should he get called up to the NHL for whatever reason. This year is just about proving that I can stay healthy and that I got a nice little reset with the surgery, so proving that I can stay healthy and get the job done, Murray said. Matt Murray has played in a total of 272 games in the NHL, having a spectacular record of 146-86-24, with a career GAA of 2.79 and save % of .910.
