Matt Murray has been hot for the AHL Toronto Marlies as of late, and Leafs coach Craig Berube seemed rather impressed and discussed his potential NHL return. In a surprise to just about everyone, the Leafs signed Matt Murray to a one-year contract in July, even though the 30-year-old missed the entirety of the 2023-24 season after undergoing bilateral hip surgery, but he was ready for a fresh start. For Matt Murray, it has been a far-from-easy trip back. Fresh from another setback in injury, Murray recently returned to action with the Marlies after he had undergone surgery. And with his strong play lately, there has been speculation of him returning to the NHL very soon. While many expected Murray's recall after the NHL roster freeze, which is scheduled to start at midnight on Thursday and runs until December 27th, his performance with the Marlies last night may expedite that timeline. Murray made 27 saves for the shutout, bringing his save percentage to a stellar .931 and his goals-against average to 1.85 through eight games.

Following the Leafs' 5-3 win over the Dallas Stars, head coach Craig Berube was asked about Murray's performance. He seemed to insinuate that the two-time Stanley Cup champion could be in a Leafs jersey sooner than later, perhaps even ahead of the roster freeze. That's encouraging. That's great for him and the Marlies. And this guy's got a lot of experience, and he's won. So, we're gonna look at everything and make some decisions. - Craig Berube

With Anthony Stolarz expected to miss at least a month after a procedure in his knee, the Leafs will lean hard on Joseph Woll for most starts on a week-to-week basis. But with a pair of back-to-backs impending, the club may still seek some relief with Murray in order to not overwhelm Woll and also for continued development in the early stages for Dennis Hildeby with the Marlies. In front of the Christmas break, the Leafs have three games over the next five days, which opens the possibility for a different goalie in each contest. Much will depend on how general manager Brad Treliving navigates the roster ahead of the freeze, as the Leafs are at the 23-man roster limit. Update: The Leafs are in fact bringing Matt Murray up to the NHL and he will make his debut for the team.
