Pierre-Olivier Joseph found out he was getting traded from the Blues to the Penguins last night, and his brother Mathieu made a heartfelt post from a restaurant. The St. Louis Blues sent defenceman Pierre-Olivier Joseph to the Pittsburgh Penguins for future considerations, sending him and brother Mathieu Joseph to different cities ahead of the NHL's holiday roster freeze.

The roster freeze gets underway at 11:59 p.m. local time Thursday and the resumption of trades starts at 12:01 a.m. on Dec. 28. Pierre-Olivier Joseph, selected 23rd overall at the 2017 NHL Draft by the Arizona Coyotes, finally broke into the Penguins lineup during the 2020-21 season. He came to Pittsburgh via a trade package that shipped Phil Kessel to the Coyotes. As a rookie, Joseph scored once and chipped in with four assists in 16 games. The following season, he played in just four games before becoming an everyday NHLer. Joseph played 75 games with Pittsburgh during the 2022-23 season. The native of Laval, Quebec, played in 23 of St Louis's 33 games this season but found it tough to get consistent ice time, averaging a career-low 13:06 per game. He had just under eight minutes of ice time in his last outing against the Dallas Stars. So far this season, he has two assists and a minus-seven rating. Joseph, 25, signed with the Blues in the off-season on a one-year, $950,000 deal. He came to St. Louis having been briefly reunited with his brother Mathieu Joseph, who was picked up from the Ottawa Senators. In the aftermath of that deal, Mathieu sent out this very emotional photo of their last supper before Pierre-Olivier headed back to Pittsburgh.

The trade opens up more salary cap space for the Blues. According to PuckPedia, St. Louis has about $4.39 million in cap space, thanks in part to a $6.5-million cap hit for Torey Krug on LTIR. Joseph recently had been squeezed out of the lineup and even more so since the Blues acquired defenseman Cam Fowler from the Anaheim Ducks. In his career, Joseph has appeared in 170 NHL games, recording eight goals and 39 points. He also has played 138 AHL contests, all of them with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
