The television network TSN has caused a stir with a monster trade offer between the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs, involving star forward Mitch Marner. Here's what they proposed as a possible major exchange between the two rivals, which, in our opinion, makes no sense whatsoever. <q>What would you think of the Montreal Canadiens trading Cole Caufield to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Mitch Marner and their first-round pick in 2025? - TSN 690</q> <iiffrraammee src=https://www.facebook.com/plugins/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FTSN690Montreal%2Fposts%2Fpfbid0JDXwE2sPEa2LY6c2urXuFVRKamT9wYgSa7ZKwm83tVp1J53KhrGz1TLy9DXDQfLKl&show_text=true&width=500&is_preview=true width=500 height=411 style=border:none;overflow:hidden scrolling=no frameborder=0 allowfullscreen=true allow=autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share></iiffrraammee> <h3>Would you trade Cole Caufield for Mitch Marner and a first-round pick?</h3> Frankly, from both teams' perspectives, this proposition from TSN, which rarely makes such publications, is completely off base. Marner's situation in Toronto is causing speculation, and everything seems to indicate a possible departure during the summer. However, acquiring another rather one-dimensional offensive forward in return certainly won't solve their most obvious problem, the lack of defensive stability. If a trade involving the Leafs' number 16 were to occur, I dare to believe it would be to add a top-pair defenseman, especially if the organization had to include a first-round pick as well. On the Canadiens' side, the interest in a talented player like Marner could be intriguing. He's already a established scorer with over 90 points in the NHL, who would automatically become the club's best offensive player. However, the star forward is already 27 years old and will test the free agent market after next season. He currently earns nearly $11 million, and he's likely to get a substantial salary increase with his next contract. I find it difficult to imagine Kent Hughes agreeing to take such an immediate risk of spending between $12.5 or $13 million next year for a player who hasn't necessarily proven he can be a game changer in the playoffs. Caufield is only 23, four years younger than Marner. It's not impossible that he too could become a point-per-game scorer in a few seasons, especially with a much more interesting lineup in the near future. For us, it's a categorical no.
