Today a new report from Elliotte Friedman has connected the Utah Hockey Club and Toronto Maple Leafs in a potential trade involving Timothy Liljegren.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been looking for a new home for defenseman Timothy Liljegren for a few weeks now. After bringing in new head coach Craig Berube the Maple Leafs decided that Timothy Liljegren was expendable and not going to be in the lineup every night. Since then the Maple Leafs have given Liljegren an opportunity to seek a trade.

Today reports from NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that the Utah Hockey Club could be in the market for a new defenseman after a surge of injuries. First, it was reported that former Maple Leafs prospect Sean Durzi would be out for four to five months due to injury.

I heard four, five months for Durzi, revealed Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast.

Then Elliotte Friedman confirmed that another Utah defenseman John Marino is closer to a return than Sean Durzi but overall still not close to being back on the ice.

I think their update this week was its still not close, said Friedman.

The Utah Hockey Club is looking to be competitive in its first year in the NHL. Owner Ryan Smith has said since purchasing the Utah Hockey Club that he is willing to do whatever it takes to win. With all of these injuries, the Utah Hockey Club will likely decide to try and trade for a defenseman. Elliotte Friedman believes several teams will dangle extra defensemen in front of Utah and try to get a deal done.

You know what happens at that point in time said Friedman. The vultures start circling 'Ahhh you need a defenseman, you're short some guys, what can we separate you from that we value in return for a defenseman?

The Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to be one of these teams as Timothy Liljegren is one of the better defensemen likely to be available via trade. While he no longer fits in Toronto Timothy Liljegren is still a quality defenseman in the NHL. Last season Liljegren had one of his best seasons with 23 points tallied in 55 overall games. He showed an ability to defend in transition and play up and down the lineup on any pair needed.

If the Toronto Maple Leafs are going to get a good return for Timothy Liljegren this is the perfect situation for them to do so. The Utah Hockey Club is in major need of a capable defenseman and has the draft capital to overpay. If the Maple Leafs don't strike while the need is there they could lose out on a big return and end up having to give Timothy Liljegren away for nothing.

As this situation continues to develop we will pass along the latest news and notes regarding a potential trade between the Utah Hockey Club and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
