The Maple Leafs have to be smart about how they handle the Mitch Marner contract situation, as he is set to become a free agent and they cannot afford to lose him.

Mitch Marner's contract is expiring after this season, and the biggest in-season decision Toronto faces is whether to attempt to re-sign their dynamic forward or allow him to walk due to financial concerns.

NHL analyst Kevin Papetti feels a proactive approach might soothe some off-season tension and potentially save the Leafs money. Mitch Marner will be seeking a huge salary, in accordance with his elite level of play and his current pace.

The right wing has collected 36 points in 25 games and has been Toronto's best forward, thus proving that fact.

That could be a miscalculation. Sometimes post-playoff negotiations get pushed back against. Marner's camp is one of the most renowned for negotiating effectively.

If the Leafs are showing faith in Marner to continue to drive their offense and it pays off, perhaps he accepts a slight discount.

Notwithstanding any potential discount, Marner's forthcoming contract could be near $12.75 million annually.

This amount may present challenges for Toronto to rationalize within their internal salary cap framework associated with Auston Matthews, who is generally acknowledged as the premier goal-scorer in the league.

Nevertheless, Marner's worth transcends merely serving as a complement to Auston Matthews, his statistics indicate superior performance when playing independently.

The example established by Leon Draisaitl receiving a higher salary than Connor McDavid further substantiates Marner's argument for a big contract.

Toronto can clear other space by simply walking away from RFAs Calle Jarnkrok, David Kampf, and Ryan Reaves. John Tavares' salary rollback to stay with the franchise will help, too, as will a slight bump in the salary cap ceiling.

Proactively addressing Marner's contract transcends mere future planning; it necessitates a foundation of mutual trust and negotiation to establish an agreement that serves the interests of both parties.

A significant playoff advancement, or the achievement of a Stanley Cup, could facilitate Marner's choice to remain with the team.
