When Auston Matthews won the game for the Leafs in overtime a few weeks ago, he pointed right at PK Subban with purpose, adding some fuel to a possible rift.

The dramatic overtime win by the Toronto Maple Leafs against the Devils on December 10, 2024, was one of resiliency and determination.

Outshot 15-1 in the first period and 27-6 through two, the Leafs roared back in the third when Pontus Holmberg scored a short-handed goal to tie the game.

That comeback culminated in overtime when Auston Matthews chased down a loose puck, outskated Brett Pesce, and slid the game-winner past Jacob Markstrom.

But it was the celebration by Matthews that stole the show. Skating right over to PK Subban's seat and seemingly pointing in his direction, Matthews touched off instant speculation. Was this a personal message to the former NHL all-star in attendance?

The moment, captured by numerous fans and even Subban himself, touched off a heated debate on social media.

Lindsay Dunn, who interviewed Subban on Instagram on Thursday, brought up the incident and shared a clip of the conversation. Subban nixed the rumor in short order.

He rejected any notion Matthews was aiming the gesture his way and, instead, it was much likelier to be aimed at Tie Domi, one of Matthews' most boisterous and vocal supporters seated at his side.

'I had a couple of my old teammates [who] said that after the game, ' Subban said, 'I was sitting watching the game and a couple guys go 'You were at the game?' and I said 'Yeah I was sitting with Blitzer and Tie' and they said 'Oh we all thought that was Denzel Washington, we didn't even know that was you' so that's what I was told after the game so when I replay it I don't think he was pointing at me. I think he was pointing at Tie'

Subban would explain the controversy, frame Matthews' celebration into its proper perspective, and boil it down to pure, raw emotion coming out of a man who had just enjoyed the game's greatest feeling.

Where speculation might have provided the fodder for drama at that moment, Subban's measured take brought them all back to the emotional intensity that defines hockey's biggest moments.
