In a bizarre turn of events, professional hockey player James Shearer has decided to terminate his contract and leave his team after misreading his salary.

Canadian defenseman James Shearer's short adventure with Hungary's Ujpesti TE in the Erste Liga came to an abrupt end only after two matches.

The departure was a consequence of a financial misunderstanding in which Shearer and his agent allegedly considered the annual salary written in the contract to be a monthly payment.

The news broke that as soon as this discrepancy came out, both parties amicably agreed to end the agreement.

«James Shearer is leaving. The Canadian defender arrived at the end of December and played in two matches. Unfortunately, he has to leave for reasons beyond our control. Shearer's agent called after his first match, because he had overlooked the offer and then the contract, but in the current situation, the salary is not to their liking. He would like to receive the amount that the club offered until the end of the season on a monthly basis. This salary requirement is not realistic for a legionnaire playing in the Erste Liga, so it did not fit into either our ideas or our budget, so the contract ended up being terminated. We regret that it turned out this way, we trusted that we had signed a useful player through an agent who has already sent several players to the Erste Liga, so he is aware of the salaries here. We wish James continued success in his career!»

Statement from Ujpesti TE

The 27-year-old began the season playing in the ECHL with the Utah Grizzlies prior to joining Hungary.

Since his time with Ujpesti TE, Shearer has signed with the Guildford Flames of the United Kingdom's Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) to further his professional playing career in Europe.
