With the NHL season underway there is little opportunity for teams to add a big star to the roster but several teams including the Maple Leafs are looking to sign KHL star Maxim Shabanov.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have plenty of star power on their NHL roster at forward. Today a new report from a trusted source in Russia has revealed that the Toronto Maple Leafs could be looking to add another major star to the organization named Maxim Shabanov.

The KHL season is underway in Russia and Maxim Shabanov is once again starring for Traktor Chelyabinsk. His play from the past couple of seasons has caught the eye of several teams. Reports are confirming that the Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Islanders, Utah HC, and Nashville Predators are all trying to possibly pursue Maxim Shabanov.

At just 24 years old Maxim Shabanov is still young but has shown plenty of star power in the KHL. If he were to come to the Toronto Maple Leafs he could join fellow Russian star Nikita Grebenkin. Grebenkin signed with the Maple Leafs after a standout KHL campaign himself. With a Maxim Shabanov signing now possible let's look at how he could impact the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Would Maxim Shabanov be a good fit with the Toronto Maple Leafs

Maxim Shabanov has put up electric stats over the last couple of seasons in the KHL. Last season Maxim Shabanov put up 50 points in 64 games. He has followed that up with 17 points in 14 games already this season.

To this point in his career, Maxim Shabanov has been one of the best goal scorers in the KHL during his time in the league. He tallied 25 goals last season with Traktor Chelyabinsk. If he were on the Toronto Maple Leafs he could provide the much-needed secondary scoring behind new Toronto Maple Leafs' captain Auston Matthews and William Nylander.

The only problem with Maxim Shabanov is that he is just 5'8. Under new head coach Craig Berube who prefers bigger and more physical forwards a player like Maxim Shabanov could struggle to find a role in Toronto if he signs. If he does break through though he would be a potential unexpected difference-maker.

This is still a developing situation involving several teams. As more information is known on Maxim Shabanov and his NHL future we will pass the news along to you.
