The Toronto Maple Leafs have made the unfortunate announcement just minutes before their game against the Jets that Chris Tanev has suffered an injury.

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced that defenseman Chris Tanev won't play in Monday's game against the Winnipeg Jets because of a lower-body injury.

Moving into the lineup in Chris Tanev's place will be Philippe Myers. Through Sunday's action, Tanev had been one of six Leafs to play in all 34 games to date.

While head coach Craig Berube was leaving the door open pregame for possible game-time decisions, he wasn't showing his cards.

Tanev did take part in line rushes during the pregame skate alongside Philippe Myers before being a late scratch, forcing a last-minute adjustment to the D pairings.

For the Next Gen game currently taking place against the Jets, the Maple Leafs skated Morgan Rielly with Myers, Jake McCabe with Oliver Ekman-Larsson, and Simon Benoit paired with Conor Timmins.

Details of the lower-body injury that took Tanev out aren't clear. His injury further adds to the rash that has afflicted the Leafs within the last month.

Tanev played 18:58 in Saturday's 6-3 loss to the New York Islanders, recording a hit and three blocked shots.

The 35-year-old veteran has one goal and nine assists in 34 games this season, his first with the Leafs after signing a six-year, $27 million contract in the offseason.

The Leafs are already dealing with Auston Matthews out of the lineup after he re-aggravated his previous injury, so the last thing they need is for Tanev to also miss significant time.
