Craig Berube announced that Auston Matthews will miss today's game, and he was also questioned as to whether he can return Friday vs the Red Wings.

Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews will miss a second straight game Monday against the Winnipeg Jets with an undisclosed injury. Auston Matthews was held out of Saturday's game against the New York Islanders.

The 27-year-old suffered the injury in Friday's 6-3 win against Buffalo, taking a cross-check to the back. Matthews missed nine games with an upper-body injury this season that needed treatment in Germany.

Asked if it was related to his previous time out, Leafs coach Craig Berube said on Saturday it's "a little bit of both.".

On Monday, Craig Berube hoped Matthews would be better after the Christmas break, but his status for Friday's game in Detroit is still up in the air.

Matthews' absence is very concerning, and even before he sat out, he did not seem very explosive. He is believed to have been brought back too early.

Matthews admitted to playing hurt for part of the beginning of the season, which hasn't helped his numbers.

This season, Matthews has 23 points (11 goals, 12 assists) in 24 games.

Craig Berube is still optimistic his team will get a win before the break, and Matthews will be stronger when the season's second half begins.
