With the NHL season on the horizon teams will be looking to add their last minute free agent finds to the roster and some believe the Maple Leafs could add a veteran.

In recent weeks reports have picked up regarding several players finding new homes in the NHL. Blake Wheeler is one player in particular who has been getting a lot of buzz lately. A recent report indicated that Blake Wheeler and former Seattle Kraken forward Kailer Yamamoto could be options for the Boston Bruins on player tryout contracts.

With the news that the Boston Bruins are interested in the 16-year NHL veteran, it has caused speculation to begin of other teams that could be interested. As is the case with most high-profile free agents the Toronto Maple Leafs have entered the discussion.

Could Blake Wheeler be a good fit with the Toronto Maple Leafs?

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been upgrading their team all summer long. Most of the upgrades have come to the defensive end of the rink. With Blake Wheeler available still, that could all change.

The Toronto Maple Leafs lost forward Tyler Bertuzzi this summer leaving a big hole in the middle of their lineup. This late into the offseason outside of a trade Blake Wheeler is the best option to fill that role.

Coming off of a difficult season with the New York Rangers where he got injured Blake Wheeler likely could be brought in for cheap. Prior to his regression in New York Blake Wheeler was a consistent 60-point scorer for most of his career with the Winnipeg Jets. If he can get back healthy and contribute the Maple Leafs could have a steal of a contract.

Now, of course, Blake Wheeler is about to turn 38 years old. Father Time is undefeated and he could fail to recapture the heights he once saw but if there's a chance he can it is a risk the Maple Leafs should take.
