Earlier today the Toronto Maple Leafs announced that Joseph Woll would be out for tonight's game due to an injury now the team has shockingly put him on injured reserve.

The Toronto Maple Leafs season kicks off tonight and already disaster has struck for the team. According to a new report goaltender Joseph Woll will be placed on injured reserve.

The move comes just hours after the Maple Leafs confirmed that Joseph Woll would be out for tonight's game due to an injury he sustained. At the time of this announcement the belief was that the injury was a day-to-day type situation. Now that seems to not be the case.

The injury to Joseph Woll is such a shock after he had been skating and speaking to the media in recent days. During a recent interview, Woll even admitted how excited he was to start at the Bell Centre. Those comments were eventually shut down by head coach Craig Berube and now the reason why is much more clear.

With the NHL season now underway the Toronto Maple Leafs will be relying on Anthony Stolarz to fill the gap in the net while Joseph Woll is out. As for the backup goalie situation, the Maple Leafs have called up Dennis Hildeby on an emergency basis. The Maple Leafs begin their season against the Montreal Canadiens tonight.

What will the Maple Leafs plan be in goal with Joseph Woll out?

The plan coming into this season was to have Joseph Woll be the main starter and play a large majority of the games. Already this plan has gone out of the window and the Toronto Maple Leafs will need to reassess going forward.

Dennis Hildeby is a fine option to fill in at the moment. Last season Dennis Hildeby played well as the starter in the AHL for the Toronto Marlies with a 2.41 goals against average and a 0.913 save percentage. However, at just 23 years old Dennis Hildeby needs to be playing games to be able to develop.

With that said if the Toronto Maple Leafs are going to be without Joseph Woll for an extended period of time look for the team to be aggressive in acquiring a goaltender as a stopgap or a backup to Anthony Stolarz. This could be done through waivers over the next couple of days or a potential trade for an NHL level goaltender who is stuck as a third option or in the AHL.

As more information is provided on Joseph Woll's injury and his eventual return to the lineup we will pass the information along to you.
