John Henderson was the oldest living Boston Bruins goaltender at age 91, but he has tragically passed away as reported by the NHL Alumni Association.

John Henderson, the oldest living goaltender to play in the color of the Boston Bruins, died on Friday in White Rock, British Columbia after a long battle with an illness. The 91-year-old goalie was the second oldest goaltender in league history behind only NHL Hall of Famer Glenn Hall, who only just celebrated his 93rd birthday earlier this month. Henderson's impact was much felt outside of the NHL, where he left an indelible mark on the sport of hockey at various levels.

Born in Toronto on March 25, 1933, Henderson rapidly picked up the "Long John" nickname since he stood an unparalleled 6 feet 5 inches tall. He broke into the NHL with the Boston Bruins, playing 46 regular-season games in the 1954-55 campaign. His numbers that season included 15 wins, a 2.58 goals-against average, and five shutouts, pretty respectable numbers considering it was a high-scoring era. Despite that fact, he played only one more regular-season game and two playoff games the following year in the NHL.

He wasn't known as "Long John" only because of his physical stature; he was known for his tenacity and love of the game. While his NHL time was brief, he was a force in senior league hockey and within the minors, where he became a favorite of fans and teammates alike. His lifetime perseverance with hockey perpetually impressed those who were lucky enough to see him skate.

Even though his time in the NHL was very short-lived, the hockey career of Henderson was just getting underway. Having played in the AHL, WHL, and QHL, he immediately became a star in the minor leagues, where he continued to impress as a goaltender. A career highlight after the NHL was the shutout he recorded in a playoff game in 1969 for the Calder Cup Champion Hershey Bears. Throughout his life, Henderson stayed very active in the sport, both as a player and with many off-ice business ventures.

The legacy he has left behind is one of resilience, skill, and an enduring love for the sport of hockey. To his family, friends, and former teammates, we offer our respects upon his passing. His memory will survive not only in the time he spent with the Boston Bruins but also in the touch he had in hockey leagues all over North America.
