Today TSN analyst Bryan Hayes spoke about the Toronto Maple Leafs loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets and believes the team is doomed once again this season.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been in a constant frustrating cycle of looking like a Stanley Cup contender in the regular season and then faltering in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. This continuous cycle led to led to the firing of former Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe this summer. New head coach Craig Berube was hired and was expected to bring a more playoff style of hockey to Toronto and prepare them to win in the playoffs.

Last night the Toronto Maple Leafs went up against the Columbus Blue Jackets who are universally considered one of the worst teams in the NHL this season. The Maple Leafs were expected to win handily but instead got blown out of the building by the Blue Jackets losing 6-2.

Since the loss, many analysts have explained the game away as a single off night during a long 82-game season. Many believe the Maple Leafs will be fine and still are on pace for a better playoff run. However, TSN analyst Bryan Hayes is not one of those who is not concerned. Bryan Hayes took to X to explain that this loss in his eyes is the Maple Leafs throwing away games like they always have in past years.

After the game, the Toronto Maple Leafs themselves knew the result was not good enough. Craig Berube flat-out admitted his team was outworked by the Columbus Blue Jackets which is unacceptable with the team's new culture and expectations.

It boils down to: They outskated us. They outworked us. And they were a harder team than we were. Bottom line, Berube said. That's an excuse, though, isn't it? So I'm not going there.

Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews also spoke after the game. He decided to take a much more literal approach to what went wrong last night. Auston Matthews revealed he believes the Maple Leafs gave up the middle of the ice far too easily and let the Blue Jackets get too many easy zone entries from the neutral zone leading to a lot of their defensive breakdowns.

The neutral zone was the Autobahn for them tonight. They were just coming in flying through, and we didn't have very good gaps, very good angles, Matthews said (via Sportsnet).

At the moment it is not time to panic for the Toronto Maple Leafs or their fans but now a hole has been poked in the team's game. If teams that are supposed to be bad can exploit the Maple Leafs' lack of urgency in defending the rush then good teams will be able to exploit the same things even more. If the Toronto Maple Leafs can't find a way to get this fixed it could become a major talking point as the Stanley Cup Playoffs approach.
