This evening the Vancouver Canucks and Patrik Allvin have locked up a key defenseman to a long-term contract. Just days after acquiring him from the Pittsburgh Penguins the Vancouver Canucks have announced a major extension for Marcus Pettersson. According to multiple reports Pettersson will now stick around with the Canucks for six seasons taking him until he is 34 years old.

The Canucks have also included trade protections for Pettersson throughout the contract with a full no-trade clause for the first three seasons and a modified no trade clause for the rest of the contract.

Many around the league knew that the Canucks were high on Pettersson when they acquired him with a couple of the front office members having had a hand in bringing him to Pittsburgh. Throughout his time with the Penguins Pettersson was known as a good puck moving defenseman who was more reserved offensively but had the skill to make plays when needed. It will be interesting to see if the Canucks have plans to get him more involved offensively as he gets settled in with the team. Now he will be a key part of the new nucleus of the Canucks going forward as they look to reshape their team on and off the ice. Next, the attention will turn to Drew O'Connor who was acquired along with Pettersson and the Canucks are high on as well. He is also due for an extension and Allvin and Rutherford will likely turn their attention to him next. Tomorrow the Canucks and Pettersson will likely have an opportunity to open up more about this move and what it means for the future of the Canucks. As those comments are made by the Canucks we will pass along the latest news to you.
