Tonight a new report from a source close to the Vancouver Canucks believes there is a high likelihood that the team could buyout Elias Pettersson's contract at some point. Over the last 12 months Elias Pettersson has been surrounded in controversy. Starting with his lack of production, then his feud with J.T. Miller, and now poor performance and frustration again after Miller's departure. With all of the disappointment and frustration around Pettersson his future with the team this season and beyond has been called into question. While a trade this season for Pettersson is highly unlikely one source believe the Swedish star will not survive his entire contract with the Canucks.
Reporter Believes The Canucks Will End Up Having To Buyout Elias Pettersson
Today on the Donnie & Dhali show hosted by Canucks insider Rick Dhaliwal they were joined by TSN broadcaster Farhan Lalji. While speaking with Lalji the topic of Pettersson's future came up and it was at this point that Lalji made a bold claim that Pettersson will not survive his current contract with the Canucks and instead be bought out.

This notion even a year ago would have been crazy to even suggest but with Pettersson's play at an all-time low and locker room concerns in play anything is possible. If things continue to go down hill for Pettersson and the Canucks there does still seem to be a trade market for him. However, if word gets out that Pettersson is a problem in the locker room or a bad teammate then that could lead to his market via trade tanking almost immediately. Either way, over the next 4 to 5 months Patrik Allvin, Jim Rutherford and the Vancouver Canucks front office have an important decision to make regarding Pettersson and his place within the Canucks organization.
