Tonight a new report from The Hockey News has urged the Edmonton Oilers to make a big change and trust their best prospect in a massive role.

Earlier today Connor McDavid spoke about being frustrated with his play over the last several games with the Oilers.

McDavid and Leon Draisaitl both have not played up to the standard that they set for themselves this season and a lot of that can be traced back to poor play from their linemates.

This has left McDavid and Draisaitl having to fend for themselves most nights and trying to create on their own with little to no support.

In the last couple of games, the Oilers have been trying different strategies to get McDavid and Draisaitl going.

One of the things they most recently tried was calling up top prospect Matt Savoie to the NHL roster to make his Edmonton Oilers debut.

In his first game on a line with Leon Draisaitl, the young forward was able to tally his first NHL point.

Since that game, Savoie has struggled to get ice time with the Oilers and tonight was listed as a healthy scratch.

With Savoie playing so well and the Oilers needing to find a spark Finn Marceau of The Hockey News has now urged the team to put all of their trust into Savoie.

Reporter Urges The Edmonton Oilers To Put Matt Savoie In The Top-Six

In a new article for The Hockey News reporter Finn Marceau was adamant that the team needs to try something different in their games down the stretch.

With so many fans and media members being impressed with Savoie's defensive play and playmaking Marceau sees Savoie as a natural fit alongside McDavid or Draisaitl to get them going back in the right direction.

Marceau first complimented the Oilers for not repeating past mistakes like they did with Philp Broberg and Dylan Holloway not giving a young player chances to get into the lineup in a major role.

Their initial treatment of Savoie has been encouraging: let him tear up the AHL for a few months as he gets used to the pro game, then play him next to Leon Draisaitl, where his offensive talent can really shine.

While Marceau is excited that the Oilers are giving Savoie this chance he is now urging them to continue allowing him to play in the top-six even if he makes mistakes or has an off game.

But now comes the most important, and most difficult, part: trusting him. Many NHL coaches have a bad habit of expecting perfection from their young players and playing gritty veterans over them. In dire need of secondary scoring and with almost no cap space, the Oilers can't afford not to trust Savoie.

This is the crucial piece that the Oilers just could not get right in the past but now have the perfect opportunity to rectify going forward.

With Savoie out tonight it remains to be seen what his future holds but the Edmonton Oilers have to make a decision soon to either play Savoie in a prominent role or send him back to the AHL where he can play top-line minutes.
