The verdict is in, and Quinn Hughes is simply too injured to be able to participate in the 4 Nations final, so he will be remaining in Vancouver with his teammates.

Despite shedding his non-contact jersey while skating at practice with the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday, star defenceman and team captain Quinn Hughes will not travel to Boston to join the USA for the 4 Nations Face-Off final, according to TSN insider Pierre LeBrun.

LeBrun adds that Hughes was not medically cleared from the undisclosed injury that caused him to miss Vancouver's last four games before the 4 Nations break.

Hughes' agent says he is completely devastated that he can't join

Hughes was reportedly devastated that he was unable to join his American teammates, which was revealed by his agent Pat Brisson.

Hughes was placed on standby by Team USA for the 4 Nations Face-Off final yesterday after Charlie McAvoy was ruled out with an injury and subsequent infection.

Under the same rules that saw Thomas Harley join Team Canada earlier in the tournament, Hughes would not have been allowed to play unless there was an additional injury for Team USA.

Now, it appears that the U.S. will be looking at bringing in other possible reinforcements in case of injury or illness.

"Sounds like Team USA looking at bringing in a couple of other players just as insurance, because of illness going around," LeBrun wrote Wednesday in a post on X.

The Americans rotated different defense pairs during the practice skate on Wednesday, leaving the combinations unclear for the championship game tomorrow.

Hughes, who has been unable to play since Jan. 31, could make his Canucks return on Saturday when the team faces the Vegas Golden Knights on the road.
