Tonight a new report has linked the Edmonton Oilers to a defenseman from the Calgary Flames who has played over 800 total games in the NHL. Earlier today the Calgary Flames made the surprising decision to place defenseman Tyson Barrie on waivers to send him to the AHL.

With Barrie on waivers, every team in the NHL will now have a chance to claim the once elite defenseman and bring him to their organization for one more run in the NHL. A new report tonight from The Hockey News has revealed that the Edmonton Oilers could be a potential landing spot for the 34-year-old defenseman for the rest of the season.
Edmonton Oilers Linked To Former Top Pair Defenseman Tyson Barrie
In a new report from The Hockey News by Caleb Kerney the Edmonton Oilers have been listed as one of the teams who could potentially look to claim Barrie and bring him back. Sure, there is some risk to his game, but would the Oilers take a flyer on someone who has been on the team before? A player that everyone had great things to say about? Is that a player worth picking up off of waivers? Of course, Barrie spent three seasons with the Edmonton Oilers and was a great complimentary offensive piece on the back end for the Oilers. Since leaving the Oilers Barrie's career has taken a bit of a downturn as he has struggled to find the consistency both offensively and defensively that he once had.

If Stan Bowman and the Oilers front office still feel the need to take offensive pressure off of Evan Bouchard and give him some help then Barrie could be the answer in a sheltered 5 on 5 role with power play two time worked in. The Oilers will have 24 hours to weigh their options when it comes to claiming Barrie if they do decide to take him on they would add an offensive defenseman on a cheap contract and save trade assets for other needs. As more updates are made on Barrie's future in the NHL whether that be with the Oilers, Flames or elsewhere we will pass the latest news along to you.
