Today Team President for the Vancouver Canucks Jim Rutherford spoke to the media and cleared the air regarding several details of J.T. Miller's absence. Earlier this week after Miller returned to the Canucks lineup NHL insider Elliotte Friedman gave some details on what led Miller to leave the team. With Miller reportedly feuding with teammates including star forward Elias Pettersson a lot of intrigue has surrounded the Canucks and what the future of their roster could look like. Since having Miller come back to the lineup the Canucks had not made any public statements about the situation or what the plans were going forward. Today that changed when Team President Jim Rutherford addressed the media and took questions about the Miller situation. During a press conference, Jim Rutherford decided to clear up some misconceptions about Miller's leave of absence from the Canucks. First Rutherford confirmed that it was Miller who requested to step away which goes against some reports that the Canucks asked him to step away first. He requested the time, and it was for personal reasons. Rutherford also confirmed that the Canucks were more than willing to give Miller as much time away to get things right as he needed. Always, when a player's asking for that, you have to give them that time. We work in this business to win every game and be the best we can, but we also have to realize these are people. Everybody has issues to deal with at certain times and when a player reaches out for some help, that's when you say, 'You need some time off, go for it. After moving on from the Miller situation Rutherford was asked about the plan going forward and how the Canucks get back on track now that one of their star players is back in the fold.
Rutherford addresses how the Canucks need to improve to make the playoffs
The Vancouver Canucks currently fall fourth in the Pacific Division and are in a dogfight for a playoff spot in the Western Conference. Over the last month, they have been at a disadvantage without Miller in the lineup and now that he has returned Rutherford wants to focus on finding success at home in front of the Canucks fans. We have some adjustments to make, obviously, but they're fixable, but we better fix them quick 'cause you can't be a playoff team with a record like we have at home. Regarding Miller, it seems the break has paid off and led to much-improved play as he has 3 points in 2 games since returning. If the Canucks can keep their chemistry going and find a way to work together they could peak at the perfect time to make a run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
