Today the mayor of Vancouver made a shocking announcement confirming the city would be canceling public watch parties. The cancellation comes on the heels of several riot incidents in past years when these watch parties were held.

Playoff watch parties, while teams are on the road, are an iconic way for fans to come together with one another and enjoy a game. Sadly in Vancouver these playoff watch parties have tended to end in tragedy and riots. That's why today Mayor Ken Sim of Vancouver decided to cancel all scheduled playoff watch parties for the time being.

Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim says there won't be public viewings for Canucks playoff games in the City of Vancouver due to ‘safety concerns.'

Ken Sim basically admitting that holding a #Canucks outdoor playoff viewing party would risk having another riot.

There's going to be 10,000 people having a viewing party at Rogers Arena tonight. Why isn't anyone worried about a riot there? Is it because there's security?

While this ban has been poorly received by fans history has shown that there is a pattern of his happening particularly in series that the Canucks lose. With the series currently tied 1-1 it remains to be seen which way things will go.

We have to be incredibly responsible and thoughtful. We have a history of 1994 and 2011.

According to Mayor Sim, they are working on a safer alternative but there was not a timeline given for that plan to be put into action. Hopefully, Canucks fans can find a way to still get together in smaller groups and enjoy these games.
