The Washington Capitals are just years away from the transition away from the Ovechkin era, and now the current captain reveals his pick for the next one.

After being swept by the New York Rangers in the first-round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Washington Capitals have many questions to answer about the future of the organization. While captain Alex Ovechkin continues to chase the goal scoring record of Wayne Gretzky, his time in the league is coming to an end, and it appears he knows who his successor should be in Washington.

Alex Ovechkin said himself today that Tom Wilson is likely the next captain.

At 30-years of age, Wilson has been a key member of the Capitals organization since the 2013 season, so while appointing a captain well into his 30's isn't a move every NHL team can make, it appears to be the one that's supported in Washington. The team have some promising young players coming through the organization, and whether Ovechkin retires after next season or in three years, none of them are ready to lead the organization.

No matter what you think about the way Wilson approaches his play on the ice, he's a great leader for this team, and after signing a long-term deal this past summer, it makes plenty of sense that he will be the next captain in Washington.
