If there is one thing the Washington Capitals have proved in the first round of the 2024 NHL playoffs versus the New York Rangers is that they can't compete with the big teams anymore, their contention era is over. With Alex Ovechkin having a few years left at best, he may want to play in the playoffs, hinting at a potential trade.

It was an up and down year for Alex Ovechkin this season, entering into the All Star Break with only 8 goals, however he flipped the switch with yet again a 30 goal season. His team ended up going out in a sweep in round one of the playoffs, and it may be the last time we see Alex Ovechkin in a Capitals jersey in the playoffs as he hinted a potential trade in the end of year presser.

« Yes, I was worried about being traded this season and I believed it would happen, but thank God, I am still a Capital. Honestly, this whole situation was tough for me. » - Alex Ovechkin

Ovechkin remains 41 goals away from Wayne Gretzky's historic record, it's yet to be determined if the russian star will end his career as a Capital.
