A new report revealed that authorities have frozen the back account of the Washington Capitals' superstar Alex Ovechkin. The Russian athlete, who's still going strong at 38 years old, finds himself in hot water because of a tax issue. According to a new report, Ovechkin's professional bank account was frozen for a $543 debt to US federal taxes; a great reminder that no one is above the law, even hockey legends. From Andrew Zadarnowski: Championat reporting that Alex Ovechkin's business bank account has been frozen due to a debt of 49,000 rubles (~$543 USD) in federal taxes. Not a good time to owe the government money in Russia I presume.

Later, in an update, we learned that it should all be settled soon, as it's a technical error. Ovi doesn't owe anything and people are working to solve the issue: Ovechkin himself does not owe anything, this is a technical error. The individual entrepreneur does not conduct commercial activities; it only has patents for Alexander's trademarks. Our accountant is looking into this now

In his career, Ovi's earnings are estimated at $138,220,892. Freezing an account for a $543 mistake seems a bit excessive. With two seasons left on his $9,500,000AAV contract, let's hope he'll be able to put this behind him and stay focused on his goal to beat Wayne Gretzky's record.
