Craig Berube took a shot at Sheldon Keefe as he was introduced as the 32nd head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs today. The move comes after the team fired Sheldon Keefe. The Leafs made the playoffs in each of their five seasons with Keefe behind the bench, but failed to get out of the first round in each year except for 2023, when the team advanced to the second round only to be promptly cast aside by the Florida Panthers in five games. Brad Treliving introduces Craig Berube as the 32nd head coach in Toronto Maple Leafs history. 👏

During his introductory comments, Berube talked about work rate. He explained how he never wants to see his players outworked by the other team. He might not always have the most skilled players, but effort is something everyone can control and Berube wants to see 100% from all his players. Berube: We don't want to be out-worked - ever. It's all about the team. Everybody's important, everybody has to be used, they all have roles. We want to play a north game, be fast, be a heavy team. Not running guys and fighting, but you have to be strong and win puck battles.

The fan response to this was mixed. Some fans appreciated his comments like a breath of fresh air, while others lamented the fact that at the core of it, this Leafs team will not be much different next season. Nothing new here. Just thew way it always has been in the NHL. Dubas tried to collect bargain bin bangers at the deadline for high picks. His system was asinine. No minutes for anyone but 34,16,88,91 and 44. He believed he could actually ride 5 guys to a Cup. Lol. Depth was 🤮

With that in mind, there is something to be said for effort and accountability, two things the Leafs were heavily criticized for when Sheldon Keefe was in control. Berube went on to talk about how he views player accountability personally. Craig Berube sound bite on holding players accountability.

Both these comments can be interpreted as shots at Sheldon Keefe, who seemingly struggled to get the best effort of of his players and regularly refused to hold the core-four accountable when they weren't good enough. Hopefully this means the Leafs might finally figure out and experience first-hand what it takes to get out of the playoffs.
