New York Islanders defenseman Mike Reilly receives tragic health diagnosis that will keep him out for months

Injuries are a part of every sport, but on rare occasions, a player will be diagnosed with an unrelated health problem, and today, that is the case with Islander Mike Reilly.

Mike Reilly is known as a productive, above-average NHL defenseman who has spent several seasons on contending teams across the league.

This season he is in his first full campaign with the New York Islanders after arriving in a trade partway through last season from the Florida Panthers.

Just 11 games into his first full year with the New York Islanders Mike Reilly suffered a terrifying injury against the Buffalo Sabres that led to him being assisted off the ice by teammates and medical personnel.

After suffering such a scary injury Mike Reilly was sent to get further tests done to determine the extent of his injury and how long he would remain out.

Today news has come out that unfortunately an unexpected health problem was found by doctors who did several tests on Mike Reilly.

Doctors diagnose Mike Reilly with serious health problem which requires surgery

In the middle of all the testing for the concussion that Mike Rielly was eventually confirmed to have doctors also found a problem with his heart.

According to reports from Frank Seravalli, the tests revealed a problem that will require heart surgery and keep Mike Reilly out for the foreseeable future.

This revelation is of course shocking and sad for Mike Reilly's chances at being back on the ice in the near future.

However, New York Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello looks at it as a blessing in disguise according to his latest comments.

Now Mike Reilly will undergo this procedure and begin his recovery process back to being on the ice and more importantly being healthy overall.
