If you haven't heard, there's a very big file going on right now that isn't getting much attention in the media. The NHL and Gary Bettman are currently in a legal battle over the death of a former NHL player, Steve Montador, who died at only 35 years old after developing a traumatic brain injury, apparently related to his professional hockey career. Montador's family has decided to sue the National League for Steve's death. The lawsuit concerns possible links between chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and field hockey. This has always been denied by Gary Bettman and the NHL, according to experts. However, yesterday, Gary Bettman was on the stand for the hearing and he made a statement that caused a huge stir with one doctor. Dr. Chris Nowinski, a leading expert in the field, noted a major contradiction in Bettman's testimony. Here it is:

To summarize, Bettman and the NHL have always considered that there is no real risk to hockey players in relation to the problematic situation of concussions and their long-term effect on the brain, such as chronic traumatic encephalopathy. As the doctor mentions, if the NHLPA told the truth in 2013, does that mean the NHL lied for a decade about the risks associated with head injuries? While the NHL defends itself by mentioning that Montador was warned of the risks, how is it possible that this warning took place if, in the end, the NHL considers there to be no risks? The commissioner has really put his foot down with a huge lie that could be devastating to the NHL if the court finds in favor of the Montador family in this lawsuit. It could create a monster case law on many similar cases to Montador. This is a case to watch.
