Bo Horvat's exchange makes Kent Hughes look like a genius

The Vancouver Canucks traded captain Bo Horvat to the New York Islanders earlier yesterday. In return, they acquired Anthony Beauvillier, Aatu Raty and a conditional first round pick in 2023.

Here's where it gets interesting. Lou Lamoriello was able to protect his first round pick in this deal, even if it involves a star player like Horvat. This means that if the Islanders pick is a top 12, the Canucks will receive their first round pick the following year.

Kent Hughes traded Ben Chiarot to the Florida Panthers almost a year ago for Ty Smilanic, a fourth round pick in 2022 and a NOT protected first round pick in 2023, the same draft year as the Islanders protected pick, acquired by the Canucks.

You can truly say that Hughes looks like a genius on this one, as does his counterpart in Florida.
