Since the 2004-05 lockout, the NHL has decided to implement a new format for the end of games that fans once loved. Indeed, in order to make the show much more attractive for the fans, the commissioner, Gary Bettman, chose to introduce a shootout system, in order to stop the defunct ties and thus allow to officialize a winner each time. This was done in the event of a tie after 60 minutes of regulation time, and after an extra five minutes of overtime. Then, in 2015-16, the overtime formula was changed again, after a lack of interest in the current formula, to make way for 3-on-3 overtime, which brought open play and a spectacle to the game, as well as ending the games on a real hockey play. If there is no winner in the five-minute overtime, there is always the shootout to settle the debate. Now, with the growing interest in the 3-on-3 overtime, many players have expressed their disinterest in taking part in a shootout, as they feel it is not part of the DNA of a team win. This is the case, among others, of the NHL's best player and the league's poster boy, Connor McDavid, who is currently advocating for a change in the game format. While appearing on Sportsnet's Tim & Friends sports talk show, the Edmonton Oilers captain was quick to give his thoughts on the format. Nobody likes a shootout. It's a crappy way to end a game! - Connor McDavid According to McDavid, abolishing the shootout and including a 10-minute 3-on-3 overtime would go a long way in allowing the NHL to define a winner, and it would give fans a chance to enjoy the end of the show more. Do you agree with McDavid about shootouts? Do you think it's time for the NHL to change its overtime format?
