This week, the Colorado Avalanche made an interesting trade by sending Jacob MacDonald and Martin Kaut to San Jose, in return for Matt Nieto and Ryan Merkley. The most intriguing part of this trade is defenseman Merkley, who is a highly offensive player who has yet to establish himself in the NHL. The 22-year-old has six points in 39 games in the big leagues. Since last year, there have been several rumours about Samuel Girard that the organization might be willing to part with him and his $5.0 million per season contract. It must be said that Colorado is quite well stocked on defense and with the arrival of Merkley who could potentially end up filling the Roberval native's shoes at a lower cost. Moreover, lately, many fans have shown their opinion on a possible trade of Girard, especially since the Quebecer is not having his best season, while he accumulated 15 points, including four goals, in 41 games so far.

Could he leave Colorado in the next few weeks? It's hard to say, especially since Josh Manson and Bowen Byram are both currently injured. However, for the reasons listed above, the organization could still look into the matter between now and March 3rd. Add to that the fact that the Avalanche are one of the teams in the lead to acquire Sean Monahan, and there could be a possibility to include Girard in the picture. However, the Habs have a lot of defensemen. It remains to be seen what will happen with Samuel Girard and if the CH will be interested in his services.

Credit: HabsetLNH.com
