Coyotes Sueing The City of Phoenix

The Arizona Coyotes have recently hit an all-time low when NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman appealed to the people of Arizona through the media, asking for help to cover the costs of relocating the Coyotes to the Tempe Entertainment District.

Currently, the Coyotes play at Mullet Arena, the Arizona State Devils Arena, which has a seating capacity of 4,700, far smaller than what a standard arena should be. However, the Coyotes may be receiving the necessary funds for a new rink after filing a $2.3 billion claim against the city of Phoenix for breach of contract.

The city and Sky Harbor stated that the plan for the Tempe Entertainment District, which would include a new home arena for the Coyotes, could not accommodate previously approved multifamily housing due to noise issues under airport flight paths.

"Phoenix City Hall's bad behavior appears to be aimed at preserving its downtown sports venue monopoly and has nothing to do with the safety or soundness of the airport," said Coyotes CEO and President Xavier Hernandez in a statement. "While Phoenix bureaucrats have allowed developers to build a basketball arena, a ballpark, and apartments in flight paths, when Tempe attempts to do the same, a manufactured crisis arises."

The Coyotes are seeking $2.3 billion in damages, equal to the entitlement value of the Tempe Entertainment District. This could be the Coyotes' means of securing the new home they desperately need.

"Phoenix will respond in due course, but the developer restates the same arguments that the airport, and more importantly, the FAA has already debunked," the city said in a statement. "At the same time, we can understand and appreciate the developer's frustration. However, their frustration is misdirected. They should be frustrated with Tempe."

The outcome remains uncertain, and the legal process will likely be lengthy. Many are left wondering whether the Coyotes will stay in Arizona or relocate to cities such as Quebec or Houston, both of which are vying to obtain an NHL franchise once more.
