When we think of hockey players being forced to serve time in the military, we usually think of Russia and its forced conscription of players to its armed forces. While many fans dread hearing that their favorite players have been called upon to serve in their nation's military, there isn't much that can be done to stop it.

Hintz to Serve in Finnish Military

The emergence of Roope Hintz as a star player on the Dallas Stars has been quite fun to watch. The 26-year-old has been over a point per game twice in his career now and forms a deadly line alongside Jason Robertson and Joe Pavelski.

While Hintz is Finnish, not Russian, it looks like he'll be joining the national armed services next summer for his mandatory military service.

"Next summer I will probably join the army."

What Does This Mean?

While most Finnish hockey players who complete military service are able to do so without it interfering with their professional careers, there is always the chance that the country may get into an armed conflict.

In the event that Finland enters an armed conflict during Hintz's time in the military, he would likely be forced to stay longer to aid his nation in the conflict. With global tensions rising, mainly with Finland's neighbor Russia, this is a very real possibility.

While we hope it never comes to this, and that Hintz can complete his service without having to miss time in the NHL, we understand that isn't always the case.
