A few months ago, Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes mentioned publicly that he was looking for a third first round pick in the 2023 draft.

In the last few hours, we have learned from informant Pierre LeBrun that Hughes would be very open to a "Kirby Dach" trade with the Florida Panthers' first round pick.

Today, the excellent Darren Dreger revealed another piece of the CH's GM plan on TSN 690. He confirmed that Hughes is still very interested in acquiring a third first round pick.

With this information, we can imagine the following plan for the Tricolore, if everything works out as planned:

1. the Habs select in the top-6 of the draft with their own pick

2. they trade the Panthers top-20 pick to acquire a young established player in order to accelerate the rebuilding of the club.

3. acquire a third first-round selection to draft another talented prospect.

Basically, Hughes would like to do again what he did in 2022, selecting Juraj Slafkovsky, trading for Kirby Dach with a mid-round draft pick, and ending the day with a second selection that was Filip Mesar.

It could be another day full of twists and turns for the Habs.
