Darryl Sutter Clashes With Flames Star Over Captaincy

By now it's no secret that the Calgary Flames suffered in many ways last year, but now, details have been revealed about one particular player clashing with Head Coach Darryl Sutter on many different occasions.

Repeated arguments

Darryl Sutter has a very old-school coaching style, and as such, this leads to clashes with the locker room, especially in the new age style of the NHL, and after refusing to name a captain, one player took that to heart.

That would be Mikael Backlund, who has been in Calgary since 2007, and after the departure of Mark Giordano, it appeared he was the favourite to be named the next captain, especially in the midst of a career year.

Captaincy?

According to Mackenzie Weegar, who joined the Flames last off-season, many players got into arguments with Sutter, but none more than Backlund, who would repeatedly scream at him "f**k you, f**k you, go f**k yourself Darryl".

While that may seem petty, many in the locker room reportedly agreed that Backlund was the best option for captain, and after losing the locker room entirely throughout the year, it's no surprise to hear that he was the one leading the charge against Sutter.
