Don Cherry is a staple in the Canadian hockey world. Even though the 88-year-old is no longer a live broadcaster for Hockey Night in Canada, his voice will always be heard.

He was in the spotlight recently when he shared his thoughts on Alexander Ovechkin and the situation with Ukraine.

The Great 8 is arguably the greatest goal scorer in NHL history. He was born in Russia and is a supporter of Vladimir Putin's presidency. They have played hockey together many times and Ovie has publicly come out and supported Putin in the past.

There are not many Russian players in the NHL that are are as devoted to Putin as Ovechkin is. To the point where his twitter profile picture is with Mr. Putin himself.

Cherry made the decision to revisit the subject in light of the subsequent conflict between Russia and Ukraine, strongly endorsing Ovechkin:

He's a hockey player. He has nothing to do with the war in Ukraine. None of this is his fault. He's not involved in it.

It's the same crowd that went after me. They don't care about hockey, and it's not about hockey. Alex is a great player and great person, and he deserves better than to be treated like this.

It's all about how he is playing and this guy, as he goes for Wayne (Gretzky's) goal scoring record of 894, is playing hard.

What do you guys think of Cherry's comments?
