In a recent episode of his 32 thoughts podcast, Elliotte Friedman talked about the goaltending situation with the Canadiens, but more specifically the situation with Jake Allen. The interest from other teams for number 34 is real, but the uncertainty surrounding Carey Price prevented Kent Hughes from trading him with a clear conscience. Allen will be in the last year of his contract this year and since we know for a fact that Price will not be back soon, maybe even never, a contract extension for number 34 could be the solution for the Canadiens.

With Cayden Primeau signed for three years and Samuel Montembeault for two, it would be surprising if a contract extension was on the table for Allen. If Carey Price were to return to the game, imagine the scenario with four goalies signed to one. So Kent Hughes will have to wait until the season progresses before deciding whether to extend Allen or try to trade him before the trade deadline.
