It's pretty rare that we see that. But Geoff Molson has come to the defense of Marc Bergevin, the former GM of the Canadiens.

Here's what he had to say, in this excellent piece by Stu Cowan published in The Montreal Gazette.

"I think it's a little too harsh to criticize Marc for the problems with the alumni. We have the biggest alumni network in hockey and Rejean Houle runs it."

"If the doors were closed, it's not because Marc closed them. It's because the old regime didn't see elders as a priority. Marc never came to me in my office and told me that the door had to be closed with the elders, I guarantee you that."

Yet a very large portion of the alumni seem to believe that the door was indeed closed. Serge Savard is one who never hesitates to take part in this debate and it is certain that he must not be in a good mood when he sees this today.

But it's also true that Bergevin is getting a lot of flak for his time in Montreal, even though he's done some great things. He drafted Cole Caufield, he drafted Kaiden Guhle, he signed David Savard, he made the trade for Nick Suzuki, he claimed Samuel Montembeault in the draft. Is he perfect? Of course not. But the CH was in a much better position when he left than when he arrived.

And he also reached a Stanley Cup final!

He wasn't atrocious to the organization. And the alumni file is perhaps another example. Could he have handled it better? Yes. But he doesn't deserve all the criticism in the world either
