We're coming up on the time of year when NHL whistleblowers like Pierre LeBrun are particularly busy. They are chatting with many league executives to make connections and find out information about an upcoming NHL trade or trades. Yesterday, LeBrun published an article on The Athletic that reveals some interesting details from the New Jersey Devils organization and the ambitions of their GM Tom Fitzgerald, between now and the trade deadline. What we learn is that Fitzgerald would like to add a top-6 winger to his team by March 3rd who will not be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. The name that stands out the most is Timo Meier. Now, knowing that he is dragging a qualifying offer of $10M, in order to not lose his rights as an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year, may slow down a club like New Jersey. The Devils GM is looking to add some weight to his lineup by acquiring a player who can score goals and hit. With this description, we can immediately make a connection with Josh Anderson. We should add that New Jersey has had its eye on Anderson since at least last summer's draft. Could there be an interesting basis for a trade between the two teams? Certainly. The Devils have several young players in their organization that could interest Kent Hughes. For one thing, the team still has their first round pick for the 2023 draft, which is definitely a very interesting element in return for Anderson. However, if Hughes wanted to speed up his rebuilding process, he could pick up a previously drafted prospect who doesn't really have an opportunity to make a name for himself in the organization right now. I'm talking about Alexander Holtz, a former 7th overall pick in 2020, who is being passed over more often than not this season. The Devils currently sit second in their division with a 32-13-4 record. The team is ready to take the second step and a player like Anderson could certainly help them do that, especially during a playoff run. There is a very obvious connection between the two teams, should a trade for Josh Anderson come to fruition, so let's keep the Devils in mind on the matter.
