A fan-proposed trade has been making its rounds and it seems quite practical for both sides.
Major Leafs and Habs Trade Just Proposed
The Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens are on opposite sides of the NHL spectrum. The Leafs are contending and trying to win a cup next season while the Canadiens will likely finish near the bottom of the league. A fan-proposed trade has been making its rounds and it is quite intriguing. For Montreal, they get to acquire more draft capital and for Toronto, they get to acquire more cap space. The concept of the trade is for the Leafs to package Matt Murray and a high draft pick for a very low return, essentially paying Montreal to take on Murray's contract. The Habs have shown a keenness to doing these types of deals as they brokered a deal with Calgary acquiring a first-round pick and Sean Monahan for future considerations. The Leafs have also made these types of moves as they traded away Patrick Marleau, a seventh-round and a first-round pick for a sixth-round pick. If Toronto would want to keep the core four together, this would be a great way to free up cap space.
Mock Trade
To Toronto: 2023 5th round pick To Montreal: Matt Murray 2024 2nd round pick that upgrades to a first if Murray plays in less than 33% of the game or if the Leafs win 2 rounds.
