The Leafs recently were forced to place Martin Jones on waivers, as expected, as they go with Samsonov and Woll in net. This clause in his contract, however, may prevent him from being claimed off waivers.

Leafs Are Hopeful that Jones Won't Be Claimed off Waivers

The Leafs have a huge question mark in between the pipes this year. While Samsonov showed that he could play at a high level last year during the playoffs, his past injuries are a huge what-if. Their current backup, Joeseph Woll, also had flashes of greatness last season, however, his inexperience is something that is worrisome for Leaf fans should he have to go in.

Martin Jones was the Leafs' plan to give some assurances that they had depth options in the net should something go wrong. The risk of him being claimed off waivers, though, could prevent this.

Jones' Wild Clause that Could Prevent Him From Being Claimed

Brad Treliving made a smart move when he signed Martin Jones, as he placed a funny clause in his contract that calls for him to be paid $100,000 signing bonus in just a few days. Its unlikely that this timing is a coincidence.

Of note with veteran #leafs goaltender Martin Jones currently on waivers: Any team putting in a successful claim will owe him a $100,000 bonus payment tomorrow.

That was structured into the $875,000, one-year contract he signed in August.
