Kent Hughes exceeded the limit of performance bonuses he could give to his players this season and this will have an impact on the Habs' payroll next year.

The Tricolore is one of the 15 teams that exceeded the NHL's limit on performance bonuses, which means that the general manager will have to deal with a $1.17 million reduction in his payroll in 2023-2024.

The Habs will be able to spend $81.33 million instead of $82.5 million next year, making them the third lowest payroll in the NHL.

The bonuses given to Juraj Slafkovsky, Cole Caufield and Sean Farrell are the cause of this penalty, which could undoubtedly complicate Kent Hughes' task this summer.

The Boston Bruins are the team most affected by this rule, as they will have to deal with a $4.5 million cut for the upcoming season.

At the time of writing, the Tricolore has 10 forwards, 8 defensemen and 2 goalies under contract for the 2023-2024 season. We must also add to that the contract of Carey Price who risks being, once again, placed on the long-term injury list, at the beginning of the season.

Despite this reduction, Kent Hughes will have to find a way to sign forwards Cole Caufield, Michael Pezzetta and Alex Belzile whose contracts expire this year.
