It's no secret that Pierre-Luc Dubois wants to play for the Habs, and the Habs want Dubois. The forward will be an uncompensated autonomous player next summer, but Kent Hughes could obtain him prematurely via a transaction. According to Elliotte Friedman, the Jets' asking price would be quite simple: a player who can help them right away. Rebuilding is not an option for them. Friedman says the Winnipeg Jets understand they'll have to listen to trade offers for Hellebuyck, Scheifele and Dubois, all entering the final year of their contracts, but they've made it clear there will be no rebuild, they want players who can help now.

Which is to say, forget the Panthers' pick or a prospect, Kent Hughes would have to give away at least one established player to bring Dubois to Montreal soil. For those who think we should wait a year and sign Dubois as an independent player, that is indeed a possibility, but there are also advantages to making a transaction. With the salary cap in place, signing Dubois at a high price (probably in the same ballpark as Suzuki) would have a major impact on the Habs' current weight. Trading Josh Anderson, for example, would free up $5.5 million.
