As you know, Kent Hughes signed Sean Monahan for another year before he became a free agent on July 1.

It's a pretty amazing signing, given the number of center players the Habs have. According to Dany Dubé, it's simply a matter of buying time.

Monahan is quite a hockey player, but injuries have taken their toll on him more often than not in recent seasons. However, Kent Hughes signed him while waiting to acquire a top-notch center, according to Dubé.

And that player could well come from the draft, as Monahan could change destination at the trade deadline, in exchange for a 1st-round pick.

Certainly, at the time of this passage, Pierre-Luc Dubois was still a member of the Winnipeg Jets. Hughes' plan, however, seems very clear and that is to acquire a top-notch center.

This means that several players are not in the GM's long-term plans. These include Christian Dvorak and Jake Evans, who could change addresses, as well as Alex Newhook and Kirby Dach, who could be used on the wing.
