Freshly acquired by the Habs on August 18, Sean Monahan was at the Bell Centre on Saturday with his wife. The couple came to visit the Habs' facilities and familiarize themselves with the place as Habs and not as visitors.

The 27-year-old forward described himself as nervous about arriving at the Bell Centre. He felt like an 18-year-old again.

"To be honest, I was nervous walking into the dressing room. I've been in the same place for almost 10 years, and I'm not really used to change. I only played for one team in junior and I've played for the same team my entire NHL career.

But the visit made me excited. Everyone is very nice, so I feel comfortable and I really felt welcome. It's a special franchise and I'm very happy to be a part of it."

Certainly, when you walk into a locker room with so much history, so many pioneers and Hall of Famers, and to think you're wearing the same jersey, it's got to be something very special.

The history really struck me. There are a lot of pictures of important people who have gone through this organization. It's kind of unreal to see the people who paved the way for everyone else, making this place such a special place to play.

I was then able to go into the amphitheatre, even though a show was being put on, and I know what it's like to go in the other side. Even playing for the opposing team, I used to get chills when I came here, so I can only imagine what it will be like when I wear a Canadiens jersey."

A clear goal

Still rehabbing from hip surgery, Monahan's goal is to be back at a competitive level in the NHL.

I can feel it. I'm practically getting chills right now. It's going to be my birthday, it's going to be the opening game, and we're playing the Leafs. My goal is to be there, play at a high level and do what I can to help the team win games. It would be a great gift for Britt and my family. That's my goal. To play the Leafs on my birthday and on opening night at the Bell Centre, that would be crazy."

That would indeed be a completely "crazy" scenario! Imagine undergoing major surgery, being traded to the Montreal Canadiens and having the chance to play the opening game at the Bell Centre on his birthday! A dream that we hope Monahan will realize.
