According to most experts, Shane Wright should have heard his name called 1st overall by the Habs, but something major happened and it slowed his development considerably. The 2020-21 OHL season was cancelled due to COVID-19. It was at this point that Wright made the decision not to play hockey during the winter, something he was strongly advised against. Many young hopefuls then turned to Europe to continue their development. Wright is tied with Connor McDavid for the most points by a 15-year-old in OHL history.

Most U16 points in the OHL in league history:

77 - John Tavares
71 - Jason Spezza
66 - Shane Wright
66 - Connor McDavid
56 - Michael Misa (2025 prospect)

A year off of organized field hockey really ruined his development. pic.twitter.com/HiyCOG0Nai- Big Head Hockey (@BigHeadHcky) July 27, 2023
It's easy today to say that this is the reason for his difficulties in the pros, but it's not too late. He's still very young. However, he hasn't had the beginnings of a player who has the status of an exceptional player, and he'll have to work hard. A gap year at such a young age, even if you train and practice, is very harmful to development. These are crucial years that prepare us to become professionals.

He's among the best 16-and-under point scorers in OHL history → https://t.co/O9npWIDxuu- DansLesCoulisses (@DLCoulisses) July 28, 2023
 Credit: Go Nordiques
