It's been making the rounds since last night: the Boston Bruins escaped the first round at the hands of the Florida Panthers, after a record-breaking season. No one would have bet on such an outcome, but it happened anyway. It was thought that general manager Don Sweeney had made some very good personnel moves to give his team the best chance to win a Stanley Cup. But the opposite happened and it will haunt the Bruins for a long time. Sweeney gave away a first, second, third and fifth round picks for rental players in Dmitry Orlov and Garnet Hathaway. He added to that a first and fourth round pick for Tyler Bertuzzi. In addition, they will have a penalty on their payroll next season, due to the contracts awarded to Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci. Let's just say that the lack of results will hurt the Bruins a lot, especially since all of the above mentioned players will be free agents on July 1st.
