The draft is far from an exact science, but it does bring its share of surprises. Just as a top-ranked player can become a flop, so a player selected in the bottom ranks can become quite an acquisition.

Either way, it's a bit of a roll of the dice. You never know what a player's development might bring. For the Habs, there's one defenseman in the shadow of the likes of Kaiden Guhle, Lane Hutson and David Reinbacher, and that's Adam Engstrom.

The Swedish defenseman impressed at last year's development camp and had quite a season afterwards, as this comment shows.

"In 2022-23, Engstrom's game went to another level and the young defenseman showed he possessed a very high IQ. His fluid skating stroke greatly helped him carry the puck easily in transition. What's more, his ability to find his teammates with precise passes fuels his offensive game. Defensively, he's been able to keep up with the pace set by his opponents, and he's very good at using his long stick to disrupt opposing forwards."

- Tyler Major-Mcnicol

At 18, Engstrom has performed very well in Sweden's best league, which is also one of the best in the world. He scored 16 points in 43 games, which is not bad considering his age.

He'll certainly be one to watch in the years to come. Here's a highlight that demonstrates his vision of the game.
