The Minnesota Wild emerged victorious in a thrilling overtime game against the Dallas Stars, but concerns arose over whether they might lose a crucial defenseman for their next faceoff.

Matt Dumba's massive hit on Joe Pavelski stirred up intense debate among hockey fans, with some calling for a suspension, while others defended it as a legal move.

However, according to Greg Wyshynski of ESPN, the league supports the latter viewpoint. Dumba won't face any additional penalties, with Wyshynski's NHL source noting that the hit was "borderline late, but within the permissible time frame."

On the ice, officials handed Dumba a two-minute roughing penalty after reviewing the play and determining it didn't warrant a five-minute penalty.

Pavelski played for just over ten minutes, contributing an assist before leaving due to a head injury.

Here are all 3 angles of the hit in question:

This isn't the first time the experienced forward has been at the center of a contentious (and frightening) playoff event. In 2019, while playing for the San Jose Sharks, Pavelski fell awkwardly on the ice following a faceoff against the Vegas Golden Knights, leaving a pool of blood beneath him. The Sharks were awarded a five-minute power play for that incident, a decision Pavelski himself later disagreed with.

Now, the Stars trail by a game and might have to continue without one of their key leaders. Head coach Peter DeBoer revealed last night that Pavelski was doing alright but couldn't confidently confirm his availability for game two.
